The national flag of Ireland, commonly known as the tricolour, features vertical stripes in green, white, and orange. This colour scheme symbolizes the union between Catholics (green) and Protestants (orange), with the white centre representing peace. The tricolour was first presented to Irish patriot Thomas Francis Meagher by French women sympathetic to the Irish cause in 1848. It gained prominence during the Easter Rising of 1916, when it was flown above Dublin's General Post Office. Since then, it has been widely adopted as a symbol representing the entire island of Ireland.
